The visibility checklist
With IDS's Visibility Checklist, you can discover how mature your organization is in terms of transport insight.
IDS, the leading 4PL non-asset logistics service provider, explains
For companies with a complex supply chain, transport is more than just moving goods. It’s about customer satisfaction, insight, reliability, quality, and being able to make smart choices in terms of resilience, agility, and cost reduction. A tender is a powerful tool for finding the right mix of carriers. But what exactly does tendering entail, and how does it help your organization move forward?
A tender is a structured process in which you put your transport needs out to the market so that different carriers can submit proposals under equal conditions. This allows you to objectively compare price, quality, and service. The benefits go far beyond just cost savings. Tendering brings peace of mind, insight, and strategic clout.
Tendering is particularly valuable when your transport network is due for review, or when you are facing growth, consolidation, or changing customer expectations. A tender can also be the right step if you are looking for better performance, greater transparency, or support for your sustainability strategy. By carefully going through the process, you will discover which carriers are best suited to your organization, both now and in the future.
A good tender process starts with a thorough analysis of your current transport flows, volumes, destinations, and service levels. Based on this, you draw up clear requirements and wishes. In the exploratory phase (RFI), you invite carriers to share their capabilities. In the follow-up phase (RFQ), they receive a targeted request for quotation, to which they submit bids.
You then assess the submissions based on both financial and qualitative criteria. In some cases, a round of negotiations or a visit to the preferred carriers follows in order to arrive at the best choice. After that, the contracts are drawn up and the collaboration can begin.
Tendering is not just about the lowest price. Above all, it should be about finding carriers that simply match your specific wishes and requirements. This allows you to build a future-proof, long-term relationship rather than trying to squeeze each other out at the earliest opportunity. A tendering process leads to better agreements, more control over performance, and greater flexibility in your transport approach. You reduce operational risks by setting clear frameworks in advance and building in alternatives. In addition, you can focus on sustainability, for example through modal shift or by choosing partners who report transparently on CO₂ emissions.
The result? Fewer surprises, more continuity, and a future-proof transport network that contributes to your broader business goals.
