Taking care of the Environment

IDS takes sustainability very seriously – we help our customers to meet their current transport needs without compromising the environment. Based on the customer's existing transportation volumes IDS can provide carbon footprint calculations and simulate the effects of carrier or modality changes on CO2 output.

How do we do that? We promote responsible transport solutions by choosing the greenest mode of transport and by reducing empty kilometres and improving load ratios through financial consolidation.

In close cooperation with the customer, IDS selects and qualifies carriers based on the average age of the fleet and the use of EURO V engines. See Carrier management.

As cost minimisation and waste reduction go hand in hand when it comes to transportation, we believe this is simply a responsible manner of doing business.

CO2 calculation on shipment level

Shippers have an increasing need to make their sustainable transportation performances visible and measurable in order to compare the carbon footprint per period, per carrier, or per mode of transport. IDS introduces a tool to calculate the average CO2 emission on shipment level in a transparent way for comparison purposes.

The average CO2 emissions per tonne-km calculation is immediately calculated in the Transport Management System (TMS) as soon as the transport order is created. Because the emissions are on shipment level, the shipper has the flexibility to view the outcome from any angle (e.g., per modality, per carrier, per production or per recipient) and to take measures to reduce the carbon footprint. These results can be published in a customized KPI dashboard to the shipper.

The CO2 calculation tool is developed by a Dutch knowledge institue and is based on the protocol developed by the Swedish NTM. This standard protocol is more sophisticated than the GHG (Greenhouse Gas) that only uses one type of road transport. Within the NTM-standard various types of road transport can be selected, resulting in a much more accurate average of CO2 emissions.
